This dinosaur’s name translates to “horned lizard,” inspired by the prominent horn above its nose, which resembles that of a rhinoceros. Current research suggests that the horn was likely not used for defense against predators but rather for display, used by males in combat over mates.
Ceratosaurus possessed sharp, blade-like teeth and was a carnivore, preying on other dinosaurs. Its forelimbs were relatively short and ended in four-fingered hands. The first skeleton of this dinosaur was unearthed in Colorado, USA, in 1883.
Growing up to six meters in length, Ceratosaurus featured a large head, a short neck, robust legs, and small arms. In overall build, it shared similarities with Allosaurus. Beyond the nasal horn, its skull also bore a pair of bony ridges above the eyes. A row of small, osteoderm-like scutes ran along its back.
Ceratosaurus lived during the Jurassic Period, approximately 150 million years ago.
